About the Planning, Development, and Maintenance Division:
The PDM Division places a very strong emphasis on providing excellent customer service to the public, clients and staff as well as helping to ensure public safety and enjoyment while they are at SPR facilities and parks.

About the Position:
Seattle Parks & Recreation Plumbers perform journey-level plumbing installation, maintenance and repair work on plumbing, heating, irrigation, gas and other related systems and components.

The work requires knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of the plumbing trade, and making decisions in selecting appropriate materials and methods of work. Most tasks are covered by guidelines although judgment is needed to make appropriate selections of guidelines.

Positions in this class are given general instructions on assignments and frequently work in different locations from their supervisors. The work includes personal contacts with vendor for purchasing materials and parts and with departmental staff for exchanging information.

Job Responsibilities
Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair drainage & irrigation systems, sewage disposal systems and other waste lines.
Clear plumbing stoppages, repair fittings & valves, line breaks and leaks.
Inspect plumbing installations and conduct required tests to ensure jobs are completed.
Read blueprints and review project plans to ensure compliance with applicable codes, specifications, and standards.
Cut and thread pipes.
Dig trenches for irrigation systems.
Perform soldering and brazing work for plumbing installation and maintenance repairs.
Order necessary parts & supplies and maintain required records.
Respond to emergency situations, make recommendations, and perform required repairs.
Maintain job status updates through online work order system.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a minimum of four years of experience working at the plumbing and pipe fitting trade under a qualified journey level supervisor or completion of an accepted plumber apprenticeship program (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background).
Licensing/Certification:
Current Washington State Journeyman Plumber’s license.
Valid Washington State Driver’s License (see note)
City of Seattle Gas Piping License (must be obtained within 12 months of hire)
NOTE: Successful Candidates will be required to supply a current, 5-year driving abstract from the Department of Licensing.

You’ll be most successful in this position if you have:

Experience working with online work order systems.
Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently.
Possess customer service and effective communication skills.
Knowledge and ability to work with outlook and Microsoft Office.

The Physical Plant department is seeking a positive, customer service oriented individuals to become part of the team. The schedule for this position is a 1st shift, working Monday – Friday 7:00 am – 3:30 pm. This is a full-time benefited position.

The Physical Plant department is responsible for the operations and maintenance, renovations and construction of all buildings, grounds and utilities of Plymouth State University. These services are provided to develop and maintain a functional, attractive and safe environment conducive to learning and to support the University’s tradition of excellence. The Physical Plant department has dedicated, professional staff trained in every principle trade required to provide these services and/or to oversee contracted services that the department does not directly provide.

Under general supervision of designated supervisor, the Plumber/Pipefitter will install, maintain and repair heating and plumbing systems. Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing defective equipment, replacing or mending broken pipes, and opening clogged drains. They will assemble pipe sections, tubing and fittings, using screws, bolts, solder, plastic solvent, and caulking. The Plumber/Pipefitter will study building plans and inspect structure to determine required materials and equipment and sequence of pipe installations. Install pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, and fixtures such as sinks, toilers and tubs, using hand and power tools. Cuts threads, and bends pipe to required angle, using pipe cutters, pipe-threading machine, and pipe-bending machine. Fills pipes or plumbing fixtures with water or air and observes pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks.

Job Description

Under general supervision, the 7388 Utility Plumber performs skilled plumbing work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water mains, pipes, meters, fire hydrants, and hydrant leads. The position requires responsibility for carrying out and explaining existing policies and methods relative to installation and maintenance activities, and maintaining records and reports of repairs and services rendered.

Essential functions include:

Installing, repairing, replacing or relocating water services and mains using copper, cast iron, ductile iron, plastic or steel pipes, and bronze, copper or galvanized fittings
Drilling and tapping water mains, locating and repairing underground and surface leaks on service pipes and water mains, and making repairs under water pressure
Installing, changing, removing and making field repairs to water meters
Setting meters and meter boxes, removing meters, and conducting flow and pressure tests
Repairing gate valves, repacking glands, checking air valves when filling mains, caulking joints on new and old mains
Supervising a small crew of semi-skilled and unskilled helpers in the performance of various maintenance activities or installations of new services
Laying out work, ordering material and maintaining documentation of work hours, materials expended, and description of completed assignments
Supervising and assisting in the excavation and backfilling of trenches, the disinfection and flushing of mains and fittings, and the setting up and operating of various equipment

Nature of Work

Involves considerable physical effort and dexterity in the use of the fingers, limbs and body including confined space entry; frequent exposure to physical and working conditions where moderately serious injuries may occur; working in inclement weather and disagreeable elements with possible health hazards.

Qualifications

Completion of the recognized program of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada -City and County of San Francisco Utility Plumber Apprenticeship program in Class 7463/7464; AND

Possession of a valid California driver license.

Substitution: Completion of a recognized five (5) year plumber’s apprenticeship program and three (3) years of journey-level experience working with water mains, pipes, hydrants and services for a water utility may be substituted for the completion of the City and County of San Francisco Utility Plumber Apprenticeship.

Additional journey-level experience working with water mains, pipes, hydrants and services for a water utility may substitute for the completion of a recognized plumber’s apprenticeship program on a year-for-year basis.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

After application submission, candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process, which includes the following:

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ) completed online (Qualifying)
Written Examination (Weight: 100%)
Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ): Candidates will be required to complete a MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant’s experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

Written Examination (Weight: 100%): Candidates who meet minimum qualifications will be invited via a separate link to attend the Written Examination. The purpose of the Written Examination is to evaluate the experience, knowledge, skills and abilities that candidates possess in job-related areas which have been identified as critical for this position. A passing score must be achieved on the Written Examination in order to continue in the selection process and be placed on the score report.

However, an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection, upon request, once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of twelve months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.

The Plumbing Helper 2 (aka Apprentice level) has 3 or more years’ experience as a helper and have knowledge of pipes, fittings, and be able to work alongside a licensed plumber/supervisor to complete projects and work orders quick, efficiently, and most of all accurately to a high-quality standard. Perform remodeling in offices, bathrooms, residential homes and commercial buildings

Installs pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, appliances (dishwashers, water heaters, stoves, sinks, tubs, toilets)

Measures, cuts, threads, bends pipe to required angels using tools such as pipe-threading machines and pipe cutters

Assists building plan studies and inspects them to help assess material and equipment needs

Hangs steel supports from ceiling joists

Diagnoses basic problems and/or failures in plumbing systems (residential and commercial)

Tests for leaks in new and repaired systems with compressed air and/or water
