Duties

Provides skilled mechanical maintenance, repair and modification of heavy and light vehicles and equipment in a Parks Canada Agency field unit or service center.

Work environment

Mechanics for the Highway Operations Unit are an integral part to our daily operations. Individuals will service, inspect and repair various pieces of on-road equipment within the fleet; the vast majority of these being heavy duty equipment including: tandem-axle dump trucks, wheel loaders and graders. We offer an engaging work environment which allows you to work with other like-minded people. Intent of the process

The immediate need is to fill an indeterminate vacancy in Lake Louise, AB and a 1 year vacancy in Jasper, AB. However, a qualified list may also be established to fill future needs- indeterminate, term, acting throughout the Highway Operations Unit.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires the incumbent to:

Conduct repetitive tasks;
Make moderate* to heavy** physical efforts, including lifting supplies, tools and equipment and standing for prolonged periods.
* Moderate is defined as lifting 50 lbs maximum with frequent lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs.
** Heavy is defined as lifting 100 lbs maximum with frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.

Physical Effort

The work requires working in awkward or confined positions in and under equipment with regular requirements to manipulate heavy objects such as tires, transmissions, transfer boxes, and vehicle attachments. The work requires pulling, pushing, bending, lifting, moving, manipulating and positioning heavy and awkward components and assemblies either by hand or using devices such as slings and other supports. Many objects/components will weigh in excess of 25 kilograms.

Typical Duties

Maintains, repairs, and sets up Grounds equipment for seasonal grounds use. Performs duties such as: testing, adjusting, lubricating, draining, winterizing, inspecting and rebuilding on equipment such as tractors, riding lawn mowers and loaders.

Ensures correct, safe and orderly storage of all Grounds equipment.
Operates all landscape equipment such as: front deck mowers, aerators, overseeder, front end loader, skid steer tractors, 4×4 trucks, dump trucks.
Operates snow removal equipment such as 4×4 trucks with plows, tractors with either snow plow or snow blower, salters, shovels and skid steers.
Trouble-shoots mechanical break-downs.
Maintains correct and up-to-date records of all repairs, hours of use, fuel used on all Grounds equipment and vehicles.
Performs Landscape Technician I duties as required.
Identifies equipment and vehicle damage or defects; recommends equipment replacement.
Assists in testing and evaluating performance of mechanical equipment and vehicles in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications and departmental procedures.
Keeps up-to-date on small engine and mechanical repair skills. Works with new technologies as they’re introduced and acquires skills. Reads manufacturer’s service manuals and other related service materials.
Operates and maintains shop equipment and tools such as grinders, drills and precision instruments.
Demonstrates safe working practices and techniques. Ensures equipment and vehicles are maintained in a safe operating condition.

Minimum Requirements for Selection

Education: Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certificate in small engine repair or the successful completion of a related training program or apprenticeship.

Experience: Minimum two years of related experience. Previous knowledge and experience with the various brands of equipment in use is an asset.

Other: Possession of valid Provincial Class ”G” driver’s license, physical ability to perform required duties, demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written).
